Klaipeda is situated in the western part of the country between Scandinavia and Central Europe, and it’s the only region of the Republic of Lithuania bordering the Baltic Sea.
Klaipeda is a year-round ice-free port, and is considered a crossroad of cargo flows where the markets of the CIS and Asian countries as well as the EU come together. Therefore, it is an important industrial and transport centre connecting marine, road, air and railway routes fully equipped for intermodal transport.

Railway
- Klaipeda is connected to the railway and transportation corridor IXB juncture, allowing easy access to Vilnius, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia.
- The “Vikingas” combined container train connecting Scandinavia and Western Europe, Baltic Sea (Klaipeda, Lithuania) and the Black Sea (Odessa, Ukraine). Container delivery time between the Klaipeda Sea Port and Odessa Sea Port - 55 hours. This train has a simplified customs clearance procedure, and carries goods at lower prices in a safer and more environmentally friendly way.
- Klaipėda is a part of the Baltic Transit project that connects the ports of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Kaliningrad with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
- Direct rail routes link Lithuania with Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Poland and Germany. Also, the main transit route between Russia and Russia’s Kaliningrad Region passes through Lithuania.
- The Lithuanian railway has two types of rail gauges - wide gauge (1520 mm) directly connecting the Russian markets and narrow gauge (1435 mm) connecting the European markets.
