The awards for digital marketing in direct foreign investment (“Digital Marketing Awards 2012”) were organised by FDI Magazine, a subsidiary magazine of the Financial Times, which also compiled the world’s rating for this activity. These are the first awards of such kind intended to evaluate achievements in the field of digital marketing of companies and organizations engaged in activities that are related to searching for direct foreign investment and attracting it. The awards committee consisted of the representatives of the leading business magazines, such as the “Financial Times”, “FDI Intelligence” and “FDI Magazine”, as well as the representatives of international investment companies, i.e. “IBT Partners”, “OCO Global”, “Econsultancy” and “GIS Planning”.

Investment and economic development companies and agencies, as well as other companies and institutions engaged in the attraction of investment, were invited to participate in the qualification stage of the Awards. The Klaipeda Free Economic Zone Management Company received such an invitation as well.

The application of digital marketing by the companies that were ranked was evaluated in a number of different categories: the best digital marketing of the country, region, city and free economic zones. In the latter category, the Klaipeda FEZ was ranked among the world’s five leading economic zones in applying digital marketing in their activities.

Twice, in 2007 and 2012, one of the Klaipeda FEZ’s digital marketing instruments – the website www.fez.lt – gained recognition in the annual “World Free Zone Convention”, where it took the premier place for the best visual impact, the quality of the content and the usage benefits.

ABSTRACT

At the request of the Klaipeda FEZ Management Company, an assessment of ambient air quality was separately performed for the territory of the FEZ and its adjacent areas.  It was carried out by UAB COWI Lietuva. By using the SELMAGIS mathematical model program, the ground concentration of the main ambient air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide as well as particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 µm (solid particles)  and less than 2.5 µm (solid particles) was measured, with respect to the economic facilities, either operating or due to start operating within the territory or its adjacent areas. The pollution caused by motor transport or other mobile sources was also taken into account.

In 2012, the ambient air within the territory of the FEZ as well as its adjacent areas remained free from pollution. The level of pollution here was slightly lower as compared to the results of the assessment for the previous three years, which is due to the meteorological conditions being more favourable for the dispersion of pollutants.

The ambient air of the closest settlements, Lypkiai, Rimkai and Jakai also remained free from pollution, while the measured concentration of carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter did not exceed the limit values set for these pollutants.

“Using waste as fuel in combined heat and power production is a sustainable solution for cities. It offers a cost-efficient answer for both energy and waste management needs, and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions considerably as compared to depositing waste in landfills,” said Markus Rauramo, Fortum’s CFO at the inauguration ceremony today.

“Today is a special day for us. The Klaipeda combined heat and power plant is the first of four we will inaugurate this year in the Baltic and Nordic countries. Combined heat and electrical power production is our main strategy, and we strongly believe in the benefits of using sustainable, local fuels whenever possible,” Mr Rauramo continued.

Fortum’s new combined heat and power plant will replace the old natural gas-fired heat production plant in Klaipeda and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 100 000 tons per year. Compared to heat-only production, the waste-fired combined heat and power generation will considerably increase energy consumption efficiency and have a positive impact on both the waste management and district heating costs.

230 000 tons of waste and biofuel can be incinerated annually in the new power plant’s boiler, having an energy efficiency close to 90%.  The electricity production capacity of the plant is 20 MW and the heat production capacity is 50 MW. Furthermore, 15 MW of heat will be additionally obtained at peak demand times by using flue-gas condensers.

In 2012, there were 17 companies operating in the Zone, with 6 more engaged in construction and design work. Nearly 1.5 thousand employees were working in the Zone’s companies. The Lithuanian enterprises that have received orders from the FEZ companies have additionally created nearly 800 new jobs.

In 2012, The Klaipeda FEZ companies invested LTL 113 million and acquired goods and services from other Lithuanian companies for the sum of LTL 784 million. From the inception of the Klaipeda FEZ activities in 2002, LTL 1.7 billion of investment has been attracted to the Zone and products valued at LTL 16 billion have been manufactured there. The value of the products exported has reached LTL 12.5 billion and taxes amounting to nearly LTL 400 million have been paid to the state.

Last year, the state received 38.8 million in taxes from the FEZ companies, which was 10 million more than the taxes received in 2011. The FEZ companies were granted tax advantages for the amount of LTL 7.9 million.

Last year saw an increase in investors’ interest in the opportunities offered by the FEZ – over 70 potential customers from the USA, Norway, Germany, China, Sweden, Russia, Finland, Denmark, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Lithuania were attracted.

In 2012, the FEZ company UAB Heidelberg Cement Klaipeda launched production, UAB Fortum Klaipeda completed the construction of a new combined heat and power plant, and UAB Vesvela started building a fish processing factory.
