Air quality in the Klaipeda FEZ, 2012

08 May 2013

At the request of the Klaipeda FEZ, an air quality assessment was performed by COWI Lietuva. During the analysis, the content of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and particulate matter in the air was measured. The measurement data was compared with the norms approved by the Ministry of the Environment.

ABSTRACT

At the request of the Klaipeda FEZ Management Company, an assessment of ambient air quality was separately performed for the territory of the FEZ and its adjacent areas.  It was carried out by UAB COWI Lietuva. By using the SELMAGIS mathematical model program, the ground concentration of the main ambient air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide as well as particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 µm (solid particles)  and less than 2.5 µm (solid particles) was measured, with respect to the economic facilities, either operating or due to start operating within the territory or its adjacent areas. The pollution caused by motor transport or other mobile sources was also taken into account.

In 2012, the ambient air within the territory of the FEZ as well as its adjacent areas remained free from pollution. The level of pollution here was slightly lower as compared to the results of the assessment for the previous three years, which is due to the meteorological conditions being more favourable for the dispersion of pollutants.

The ambient air of the closest settlements, Lypkiai, Rimkai and Jakai also remained free from pollution, while the measured concentration of carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter did not exceed the limit values set for these pollutants.
