The Port of Klaipeda Convincingly Leads in the Baltics

26 Jun 2019

Port of Klaipeda handles the most cargo out of all ports in the Baltics by a significant margin, according to the region’s statistics, BNS, the leading Lithuanian news agency, reports.

The Klaipeda port saw throughput of 18.9 million tonnes during the first five months of the year, an 8.5% increase over the same period in 2018. Comparatively, throughput fell in Riga (by 7.9%, to 13.5 million tonnes) and Liepaja (by 3.7%, to 3.1 million tonnes), and grew in Ventspils (by 19.6%, to 10 million tonnes). The Port of Tallinn has not released its throughput statistics for the period of January to May yet. According to Statistics Estonia, the first five months of the year Estonian ports handled 15.3 million tonnes of cargo altogether.

Eimantas Kiudulas, the CEO of the Klaipeda FEZ, comments that access to the biggest northernmost universal warm-water port in the Baltic Sea is one of the most important factors to attract investors.

“On the whole, the Port of Klaipeda makes Lithuania uniquely competitive in the region. Additionally, it is within minutes from the Klaipeda FEZ. It is no surprise that most members of our community utilize this infrastructural advantage for both importing raw materials and exporting products. It is mentioned among the main reasons why these companies decided to establish themselves at the Klaipeda FEZ. I am happy that the Port of Klaipeda is constantly looking for new solutions, services to offer, markets to enter and ways to improve its infrastructure, while also participating in shared projects with various businesses, trying to meet their needs. It is obvious that this is reflected in the Port’s results, as well as its leadership position in the region,” says E. Kiudulas.
