The Klaipeda Seaport Authority Expects 352 Million EUR in Investment in Upcoming 3 Years

The Klaipeda Seaport Authority is planning to upgrade their quays, deepen their water areas, change the ship entry canal, buy new ferry boats for the Smiltynes Perkela passenger service, the Verslo Zinios business daily reports.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced that there are plans to invest 352.4 million EUR in Port of Klaipeda development, with a share of the money coming from EU structural funds. The majority of the money is set to go towards projects concerning port quay construction and reconstruction projects, as well as deepening the water area and quays in the territory of the port.

“The Port of Klaipeda is looking at a busy future. A historic project, the reconstruction of the port’s breakwaters is being planed. The ports gates will be overhauled with the ship entry canal being moved. We will continue to deepen the port and reconstruct the port’s quays in order to be able to service even bigger ships. This is our way to make the Port of Klaipeda safer and more competitive in the market,” Vidmantas Paukštė, the Director General of the Klaipėda Seaport Authority, says.

V. Paukštė points out that the project to renovate the Malkos bay should be completed this year. According to the Director General, this is especially important for the port because the companies operating out of the southern side of the port were skipped for several years when the time came to direct renovation resources.

It has been announced that once the important projects, which are partly financed by the EU structural funds, gain speed, other projects, which concern the port infrastructure and legal documentation improvements, will be continued. It is stated that all of this will help improve the competitiveness of the Port of Klaipeda in the market.
